A good thriller for me

Post by Naiwen on Mon Oct 03, 2011 5:47 pm

Would you recommend a good thriller such as the death note for me? I loved it myself and would like another in the genre.

Strangely enough, I was searching for mangas similar to Death Note the other day?

Here's the link I found really useful:

The Liar Game I am going to get, certainly.

Code Geass is like Death Note. Both main Protagonists are very Intellectual and the plot revolves around the Ideal of "Changing the World into a brighter and newer one".

Did watch a bit, didn't really like it because I didn't like Lelouch Lamperouge none too much.

Sorry for bumping up a old thread, but how about Claymore, or Detective Conan?

Re: A good thriller for me

I only read the first few manga volumes, so found a summary:

In a world where humans coexist with sentient monsters called yoma (妖魔 yōma[color:48fd=#00e]?)
that feed on human innards, a group, simply called the Organization,
has created an order of half-human, half-yoma warriors to protect humans
from yoma, for a large fee. Based on the large swords they carry,
the people of this world have named these warriors Claymores. They are
also referred to as "silver-eyed witches", based on their appearance and
seemingly cold nature toward others. Claymores, as well as yoma,
possess bodily energy called yoki, which allows them to perform
superhuman feats. Claymores who charge their yoki auras beyond the limit
that their bodies can sustain turn into hideous creatures called
awakened beings. Like yoma, awakened beings crave human flesh, the
difference being that awakened beings are much more powerful. Each
Claymore is ranked based on his or her strength and ability in
comparison to other Claymores. There are 47 ranks corresponding to the
number of regions of the continent, and each Claymore is assigned a
different region of the continent wherein to slay yoma.

During the premise, a Claymore named Clare heads to a small town and
meets Raki, a boy whose parents were killed by a yoma. Later that night,
Clare heads toward Raki's home and kills his brother Zaki, who is
revealed to be the yoma that killed Raki's parents. The yoma had taken
over Zaki's body when he and Raki witnessed the murder of their parents
at the hands of the same yoma when they were but children. Out of
gratitude, Raki ends up following Clare from town to town during her
missions to exterminate yoma. The two travel together until they are
separated when Clare is forced to battle a sadistic Claymore named Ophelia.
Before parting, Clare promises to find him if she survives. The story
becomes a tale of revenge, as Clare seeks to confront someone from her
past.

It's a little long (the summary).
It was really strange. That's the only way to describe it. But you might like Elfen Lied (I've heard it's good, and there is a female main character so I thought it would be shojoish but eh). That's also a thriller.

Not really a thriller but Cirque Du Freak is what I have been reading lately and it is not honey and flowers. May be an interesting read.

In Anime... have you seen X-1999?
CowBoy BeBop the "knock in heaven's door" Movie?
Those are two I can recall that may be considered thrillers.

Hang on! I just remembered something!
I want to get into "when they cry" because it seems like a very good thriller.

I also saw GANTZ, not sure you'd like that, but it is a thriller so I mentioned it anyway.

Well, I liked Deadman Wonderland a lot, but the anime is very short.
The protagonist Ganta is accused to have killed all of his classmates and has to go to Deadman Wonderland - one hell of a prison. Deadman Wonderland is a cruel amusement park. For visitors a funny leisure activity, for the prisoners a cruel world. Some prisoners have special skills and have to participate in a deadly game. Of course Ganta is one of them.

Opening:

And I heard that Mirai Nikki ("Future Diary") is a good anime, too. I only watched the first episode, so I can't say much about it, but I think it's worth a try.

Opening:

I also know Togainu no Chi. If you have nothing against slight Shonen-Ai it could be a great choice. But TnC is a short anime, too. Originally it's a visual novel so the anime can't reach the original I guess. And I find one character very annoying... But I like the story of a game about life and death. And I liked the Shonen-Ai elements. Too little if you ask me, since the visual novel is Yaoi.

Opening:

If you would ask for some interesting manga, I would recommend Rabbit Doubt and (Rabbit) Judge.
Rabbit Doubt "Trailer":
Not really a trailer, but a nice video. But the manga is not about rabbits and wolfs. It's about a game called "Rabbit Doubt." A group of players meet each other and get kidnapped. They get locked up in some place and get killed one after another. They have to play the game with their own lifes to find out who's the wolf.

Naiwen, I would suggest you to start watching Monster anime. I have just started it recently and you would really like it. It might be a little slow but it is truly a masterpiece! Maybe something we can relate to in real life
